I officially start my postseason run this weekend as the 3 seed in the Justice (Money) League & am matched up against a team that leads the league in points scored. I crushed this same manager last season by 40-50 points in the 1st rd despite him having studs such as LaDainian Tomlinson, Terrell Owens & Randy Moss. So it’s all about matchups & execution at this time of the season and i’m confident that my team will come through on Sunday.

Week 14: 12-4
Overall: 128-79 (.618)

Saints/Bears: For the 3rd consecutive season, Chicago will have a chance to end New Orleans’ Super Bowl hopes. Drew Brees has among one of the league’s best ratings at home, but it’s a different story once he steps outside of the Superdome. The Saints are just 1-5 on the road this season, while Brees has a rating of 76.7 with 7 touchdowns & 10 interceptions. As long as Pierre Thomas & Lance Moore are contained, then the Bears should win this game & put pressure on Minnesota to win Sunday.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Buccaneers/Falcons: Despite their Monday night loss, Tampa Bay looks to be in good position to land a Wild Card spot as they currently hold the 5 seed in the NFC. With that being said, this is a must-win game for Atlanta, who is tied with Dallas for the 6th & final NFC playoff spot. I would suggest for the Falcons to use plenty of Michael Turner & Jerious Norwood on Sunday, especially after seeing the Bucs’ run defense giving up over 300 yards to Carolina.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Redskins/Bengals: After a much-publicized spat by Clinton Portis earlier this week against his head coach Jim Zorn, Portis has a chance to really make things up by punshing Cincinnati’s 23rd ranked run defense. I think that the Bengals have officially quit on the 2008 season after being outscored 69-6 over their last 2 games.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Titans/Texans: I smell a Texas-sized upset! Unless the Titans falter late, they should be able to lock up the 1 seed & homefield advantage throughout the AFC Playoffs. But i feel like this will be a trap game for Tennessee with a possible playoff matchup looming next week against Pittsburgh. Texans rookie back Steve Slaton had his coming-out party back in Week 2 against the Titans when he ran for 116 yards on just 18 carries & even broke off a 50-yard run against the league’s 7th ranked run defense. I think Slaton will come up with another big game as he will be matched up against another excellent rookie back, Chris Johnson of Tennessee.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Lions/Colts: This one is going to get very, very ugly. Joseph Addai looks like he could be iffy for Sunday with a shoulder injury, so look for Dominic Rhodes to explode with his best game of the season against Detroit’s league-worst run defense. Peyton Manning will be going up against a Lions secondary that has just FOUR interceptions to this point, so you fantasyheads need to start as many Colts as you can for your playoff game..which includes their defense! Detroit could possibly be held out of the end zone, but my feelings are that they’ll get a late cheap TD to make some fantasy owners happy.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Packers/Jaguars: Green Bay sure picked a perfect opponent to take their frustrations out on. Jacksonville is a dismal 1-5 at home & lost Fred Taylor for the season, who recently passed Corey Dillon & O.J. Simpson on the NFL’s all-time rushing yardage list. Despite the Packers’ recent defensive struggles, i don’t think this will be a shootout as the Jaguars are averaging just 13.3 PPG during their current 4-game losing streak.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Chargers/Chiefs: For the first time since their Week 3 win over the Jets, San Diego won a game in dominating fashion….ok, i may be egging them on a bit too much since it was against the Raiders. I actually think this game can turn into a wild shootout with two bad pass defenses going against eachother. But the big difference here is the run defense…San Diego’s is still solid (providing that Jamal Williams doesn’t get hurt), while Kansas City can’t stop anybody. Boy, i’m sure the Chiefs really do miss Jared Allen. I say this because their non-existent pass rush has generated just SIX sacks all season, which is on pace to becoming an NFL record.

Mattie T’s Pick:

49ers/Dolphins: Ok, so San Francisco killed the West Coast teams traveling East for an early start theory for at least one week with their recent win over the Bills. But Miami is for real & looking to grab a share of the AFC East lead. The 49ers can make this interesting if Frank Gore plays, but i have a feeling that the Dolphins will squeak out a close win.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Bills/Jets: The Jets need to get themselves in order after back-to-back disappointments against the Broncos & 49ers. Couldn’t of picked a better opponent to crush in the free-falling Bills, who have lost 6 of their last 7 games after starting 4-0. With 6 combined points in their last 2 games, don’t expect for Buffalo to put up much of a fight.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Seahawks/Rams: In a matchup between two terrible teams, i tend to favor Seattle more especially with the emergence of rookie TE John Carlson. But this week, the Seahawks should have plenty of success running the ball against a Rams team that simply cannot score, nor stop anyone on defense…but yet they want Jim Haslett back for ‘09?

Mattie T’s Pick:

Vikings/Cardinals: Bears fans will be very interested in this game, as Minnesota needs to win to stay atop the NFC North. Good luck trying to do that against an Arizona team that is 5-1 at home this season. Kurt Warner has thrown just 3 interceptions (with 1 of them coming last week against the Rams) all season at home, so look for the Cardinals to air it out plenty & have big success. The Vikings will most likely start Tavaris Jackson, who hasn’t won a start in nearly one calendar year. (Last win was against Chicago on December 17th, 2007.)

Mattie T’s Pick:

Steelers/Ravens: This will be a very physical & low-scoring game, as a Baltimore win would create a 2-way tie for the AFC North division title with 2 weeks to go. I am convinced that Pittsburgh has the best defense in the league after their unbelievable display against Tony Romo & the Dallas offense in a great comeback Week 14 win. It will be close, but the experience of Ben Roethlisberger should trump a young but impressive Joe Flacco.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Broncos/Panthers: DeAngelo Williams may be the hottest back in football right now after his amazing 186 yard game on Monday night against Tampa Bay. The Panthers should have more success running the ball on Denver’s 26th ranked run defense in an attempt to keep Jay Cutler off the field, who is 3rd in the league in pass attempts. Carolina has a chance to become the first NFC team since the ‘05 Seattle Seahawks to finish the season undefeated at home. By the way, that Seattle team reached the Super Bowl.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Patriots/Raiders: Condolences go out to Matt Cassel, who lost his father earlier this week & is unsure on whether he’ll play against Oakland. Even if Cassel can’t go, Sammy Morris & Kevin Faulk should be able to punish a Raider defense that is 30th against the run.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Giants/Cowboys: A Giants loss on Sunday could make things very interesting in the NFC, as Carolina sits just 1 game back for the top seed & homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. Look for Dallas to come out in desperation mode after blowing a 10-point 4th quarter lead against Pittsburgh in Week 14. Tony Romo missed the earlier season meeting at the Meadowlands, but has won his last 3 regular-season starts against the Giants.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Browns/Eagles: It seems as if the Donovan McNabb benching fiasco in Baltimore a few weeks ago has kept Philadelphia’s season alive, as Brian Westbrook has finally come to form with back-to-back 100-yard games for the first time all season. Make it 3 in a row after the Eagles destroy a hapless Browns team that has scored a whopping total of 21 points during their current 3-game losing streak.

Mattie T’s Pick:

Let me introduce myself to those who are not familiar with my work before i begin on my blog. My name is Mattie T & i am a sports writer for BMS Radio Chicago (BMSRadio.com). Our website has been down for quite some time now, so this will be a temporary home for my readers to view my work. I have missed blogging and i hope that i won’t lose a step with my latest entry.

As all of you know, O.J. Simpson was sentenced earlier today for up to 15 years in prison for armed robbery & kidnapping. Even though i wasn’t born in the era of Simpson’s heyday, i’m sure that a lot of my readers can remember his Heisman Trophy-winning season with USC in 1968, or his 11 year career which was spent with the Buffalo Bills & the San Francisco 49ers.

Simpson was also the first NFL player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. But today, all of his previous accomplishments took a backseat to his recent legal woes, which will land him (at least) anywhere from 9 to 33 years in prison.

I for one, thought that Simpson’s explanation for his crime was very poor & unintellectual. If he wanted to “retrieve” personal items that were taken from him, a meeting could’ve easily been set up at a more secluded location. Simpson’s first mistake was choosing to “break into” a Palace Station hotel room in Las Vegas, as the entire incident was being taped. Simpson’s second mistake was using a deadly firearm & lying about it when his first opportunity came about to explain his side of the story.

Was this done in an attempt to “hide valuable information” from the Goldman family, who have already collected huge amounts of money AND some of Simpson’s most prized valuables, which includes his 1968 Heisman Trophy? We will never know.

One thing is for sure though. The Goldmans expressed a great deal of joy over Simpson’s sentence & believed that he “drove himself to the brink” & “pushed himself over the edge”.

I feel that O.J. should’ve used a different method to retrieve his personal items. When you force yourself into a hotel room with a deadly weapon, it’s basically telling the victim to “give me back what’s mine or i’ll hurt/kill you”, and that’s not how things should be done. We have to remember that everything Simpson has done since the day he was acquitted in a double-murder trial has been heavily scrutinized until today. So now, this man could very well never spend another day of his life on the streets, but i’m sure that he could possibly receive “star” treatment at whatever prison facility he ends up at.

O.J. Simpson, you let me down BIGTIME.

Next up is 31-year old New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who recently got himself into trouble by accidentally shooting himself in the leg while out at a New York nightclub.

Keep in mind that Burress is married & has a son, so imagine what explanation he had for his family once this happened. Numerous sites from around the Internet have reported that Burress‘ reason for carrying a gun with him was to protect his “flashy jewelry“.

Plaxico, the only bling you should be displaying is your Super Bowl ring that you won by catching the game-winning touchdown pass from Eli Manning to help stun the previously unbeaten & heavily favored New England Patriots in February. Any other reason is IRRELEVANT.

Burress was viewed as a national hero for months after the Super Bowl. He continues to play at a high level every Sunday despite missing big chunks of practice time due to injuries. And this is how you act to becoming a champion?

So now because of this incident, the New York Giants have decided to suspend Burress without pay for the remainder of the regular season. As for the playoff roster? Plaxico won’t be on it. The Giants are heavily favored to win the NFC & make their 2nd straight Super Bowl appearance, but thanks to Burress‘ stupid decision, he won’t be a part of it.

Plaxico Burress, you let me down BIGTIME.

Finally, i want to address the current situation involving Michael Vick. Vick is currently serving prison time for his actions involving an illegal dogfighting organization called “Bad Newz Kennels” that Vick helped start up on one of his Virginia estates. There has been some interest from the United Football League on Vick once his prison term is up in July 2009, but sadly i think that an NFL team will give him another shot once his suspension (whatever that may be) is up.

We have to remember that the NFL gave second chances to guys like Lawrence Phillips & Leonard Little, so I’m sure there is a team that’s waiting to get in contact with Vick. But how much will a team be risking to spend on him & already facing huge debt problems (Vick bought expensive vehicles for several of his family members after agreeing to his $140 million-dollar deal in 2004), how will he provide for himself?

It seems as his former team, the Atlanta Falcons have quickly put themselves to forget about this entire mess as they are enjoying a surprisingly successful season & have a chance to reach the postseason with a rookie quarterback.

Take that, Michael Vick!!

I myself was a Vick fan & supporter until he got indicted. Now i can no longer wear his jersey as he is an embarrassment & disgrace to pro athletes everywhere.

Michael Vick, you let me down BIGTIME.

Feel free to leave your comments/thoughts on my blog.

Good Morning to all!!!!

First off, would like to apologize for our recent downtime but everything appears to be up & running again!!!!!

First, let’s discuss the recent MLB trading deadline which ended this past Thursday. Two big names changed zip codes & could possibly add interesting twists to pennant races as we enter the final 2 months of the regular season.

The first one (which DJ Special Blend should be happy about), is Ken Griffey Jr. going from the Cincinnati Reds to the Chicago White Sox. Griffey wore #17 even after Nick Swisher agreed to give up his #30, which was Griffey’s jersey number in Cincinnati.
Griffey made his White Sox debut last night in Kansas City & went 2-3 with a pair of RBI singles as he helped Chicago win 4-2 & keep their AL Central lead at a half-game over Minnesota.

Â

With Griffey moving to centerfield & Nick Swisher moving to 1st base, Paul Konerko seems to be the odd man out for the White Sox.

Despite being a team captain & making $12 million this season (3rd highest on team), Konerko is expericing perhaps the most difficult slump of his MLB career as he’s hitting just .214 in 79 games this season with the White Sox.

The Sox will have some options to make in the off-season as both Griffey Jr. & Jim Thome will be free-agents.

Â

Between them, the twosome have hit 1,135 career home runs in 4,593 major league games.

There was a late deadline deal on Thursday, as the Boston Red Sox shipped Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers in part of a 3-team deal.

The Pittsburgh Pirates received 4 minor-leaguers in the deal, while Jason Bay went to the Boston Red Sox.

Ramirez made his Dodgers debut on Friday night against Arizona & went 2-4 in left field during LA’s 2-1 loss.

Ramirez had a chance to make his 1st game with Los Angeles a memorable one, but he grounded into a game-ending doubleplay after he represented the winning run with 1 out in the 9th inning.

Â

With the trade to the Dodgers, Ramirez will now get to play with former Red Sox teammates Nomar Garciaparra & Derek Lowe.

Oddly enough, Ramirez’s new manager Joe Torre was on the losing side when Boston came back from an improbable 0-3 ‘04 ALCS deficit to beat the New York Yankees before going on to win the World Series over St. Louis in 4 games.

Finally, Jason Bay made his Red Sox debut on Friday night & went 1-3 while scoring the game-winning run in the 12th inning to help Boston beat Oakland 2-1 & remain the Wild Card leader by just a half-game over Minnesota.

The Red Sox are hoping that they get the Jason Bay who hit 30 home runs & drove in over 100 runs in 2 straight seasons from 2005-2006 with Pittsburgh.

Team USA continued their preparation for the Beijing Olympics with a 120-84 win over Lithuania on Friday.

Team USA had six players in double-figures, led by Dwyane Wade’s game-high 19 points.

Their next game will be against Russia, which will be shown on ESPN2 at 2 am EST on Sunday morning.

The Houston Rockets made a blockbuster deal in hopes of ending their 11 year win-less playoff drought by acquiring 2004 Defensive Player of the Year Ron Artest from the Sacramento Kings.

With Artest now joining Tracy McGrady & a healthy Yao Ming, the Rockets now look to challenge both the Lakers & Hornets to represent the Western Conference in the NBA Finals for next season.

Â

Speaking of the Hornets, they will appear on national TV for the 1st time during Christmas Day this December as they’ll face Dwight Howard & the Orlando Magic on TNT.

Congratulations to Art Monk, Darrell Green, Fred Dean, Emmitt Thomas, Andre Tippett & Gary Zimmerman, who will all be inducted into Pro Football’s Hall of Fame later today in Canton, OH.

Â
The Indianapolis Colts & Washington Redskins will then kick-off the 2008 NFL preseason with the Hall of Fame game on Sunday night at 7pm CST on NBC, as several Colts starts will sit out this one which includes Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, Bob Sanders & Dwight Freeney.

Tomorrow night’s game could also feature the debut of Redskins’ defensive end Jason Taylor, who was acquired on July 20th from the Miami Dolphins.

Good morning to all! Hope everyone had a fantastic Independence Day whether it was workin’ up the grill, attending local parades or shooting off illegal fireworks!

Now, let’s get down to business as the NBA’s free-agent frenzy kicked off this past Wednesday…

Baron Davis has made the biggest off-season move so far, as he will leave the Golden State Warriors to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers for a reported $65 million over the next 5 seasons.

The Clippers have never been known as a team with flashy guards, but Davis’ addition gives them their best point guard since the days of Norm Nixon in the mid-to-late 80’s.

Davis’ signing also should bring back F Elton Brand, who currently is an unrestricted free agent but has been offered a deal from Golden State.

The Portland Trailblazers have signed G Rudy Fernandez away from his Spanish league team just 1 year after the team traded for him in a 1st-round swap with the Phoenix Suns.

Fernandez showed an ability to score (averaged career-high 21 PPG last season for Spain) & shoot from the perimeter (hit 41.0% percent of his 3-point field goals).

Fernandez will most likely serve as a backup to former Rookie of the Year award winner Brandon Roy in Portland.

Jose Calderon has re-signed with the Toronto Raptors & will most likely be the team’s starting point guard next season.

Former backcourt mate T.J. Ford was part of the deal that brought 6-time All Star F Jermaine O’Neal to Toronto from Indiana on June 26th.
Calderon is coming off his best NBA season in which he averaged a career-high 11.5 PPG, 8.3 APG, shot 90.8% from the free-throw line & 42.9% from three-point range.

The Sacramento Kings re-signed G Beno Udrih, who will take over as the team’s starting point guard next season.

Udrih was mostly used as a backup point guard until Sacramento dealt Mike Bibby to the Atlanta Hawks on February 16th.

Udrih responded with his best NBA season, as he averaged a career-high 12.8 PPG & shot 46.4% from the field with the Kings.

Washington Wizards G Gilbert Arenas agreed to a deal worth up to $111 million that will keep him in the nation’s capital through 2014.

Arenas has been known as one of the league’s most explosive guards, but is coming off an injury-riddled season in which he only appeared in 13 games for the Wizards & shot just 39.8% from the field, which includes a career-low 28.2% from 3-point range.

Overall, Arenas has averaged 22.8 PPG in 431 career games with both the Golden State Warriors & Washington Wizards through his first 7 NBA seasons.

The Dallas Mavericks signed free-agent C DeSagna Diop, which will give Dallas the same center combination (along with Erick Dampier) that produced a franchise-record 67 wins & a trip to the NBA Finals in 2006.

Diop was included in the blockbuster deal that brought G Jason Kidd to Dallas from New Jersey on February 13th.

The Mavericks also signed former slam dunk champion Gerald Green, who will now play for his 4th different team in 3 pro seasons.

The New Orleans Hornets have re-signed G Chris Paul to a 4-year deal worth $68 million.

Paul continues to evolve as one of the league’s best point guards, as he averaged a career-high 21.1 PPG while leading the NBA with 11.6 APG last season.

Paul also recently went through his 1st taste of the NBA Playoffs & did not disappoint, with an average of 24.1 PPG & 11.3 APG in 50.2% shooting in 12 games, as the Hornets took the defending champion Spurs to 7 games during the Western Conference semifinals.

The New York Knicks agreed to a 2-year deal with free-agent G Chris Duhon.

Duhon could possibly compete alongside 14-year veteran Stephon Marbury for the team’s starting point guard job under new head coach Mike D’Antoni.

Marbury averaged a career-low 13.9 PPG for the Knicks last season but did shoot a career-best 37.8% from 3-point range in just 24 games.

Before i sign off, gotta offer my condolences to the family of former NFL safety Terrence Kiel, who was killed in a car accident on Friday evening.

Kiel spent 4 seasons in the NFL (all with San Diego) & played his last professional NFL game on January 14, 2006 in the AFC Divisional Playoffs against New England.

Kiel was only 27 years old & had been arrested before on drug-related chargers, which led to his release from the Chargers in March of 2007.

I’ll be back with another NBA Free Agency Update next weekend.

If both the Cubs & White Sox maintain their 1st place leads, then this will be the 1st time that both Chicago teams reach the postseason since 1906.

An all-Chicago World Series in October? It could happen folks.
